Our Story

Sam was an extremely fit 44-year-old father of two boys when, in April 2012, life changed in an instant. He suddenly became critically ill with pneumonia, and within just 48 hours of being admitted to hospital, his family was told he might not survive the night.

His life was saved thanks to the incredible work of the ECMO team at University Hospital of South Manchester. Sam was transferred to the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit and placed on an ECMO machine — a machine that oxygenates the blood outside the body and rests the lungs, giving them the chance to heal.

Over the four weeks he spent in intensive care, Sam received more than 30 units of blood and blood products. When he finally regained consciousness, the first thing he saw on television was the coverage of the 2012 London Marathon. At that moment, he could barely lift his legs, and running seemed like an impossible dream.

But Sam’s story became one of recovery and determination. From not knowing if he would ever walk again, he went on to run the Wilmslow Half Marathon, the 2013 London Marathon, and even completed a half Iron Man triathlon. Challenges for 2015 included an ultramarathon (34 miles) and the Pledge a Pint Unofficial Triathlon — where, instead of asking for financial sponsorship, he encouraged people to “pledge a pint” and become blood donors, aiming to inspire 500 new donors.

Sam’s journey is about more than survival — it’s about hope, resilience, and the power of sharing. And that spirit is what inspired this blog.
